The Governing Council member is invited by the Chairman of the program to serve on the board. Each member is a prominent Indian in academia, industry or non profit sector whose efforts have brought recognition to India. They are invited to speak at public events and are mascots for the Indian American Council. The Governing Council meets on an annual basis to discuss program developments, new initiatives and strategic direction. This category is not open for public enrolment.The current Governing Council of the Indian American Council is made up of several prominent Indians who contribute their vision and goodwill to the program. Sam Pitroda: ChairmanChairman, National Knowledge Commission & Chairman, C-SAMMr. Sam Pitroda is the Chairman and CEO of World-Tel Limited, an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) initiative. He is also the Chairman and Founder of Sevend high-technology and the founding Chairman of a Non-profit Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions in India. As a result of his pioneering works, Mr. Pitroda holds more than 50 patents and has lectured extensively on Telecom, Technology and Development, in almost all parts of the world. Sam Pitroda has also featured in several newspapers, magazines, radio and TV programs. He is also the founder and CEO of C-SAM, Inc. He brings enormous professional weight and credibility to C-SAM's operations. His reputation as an internationally respected telecom inventor, management guru and entrepreneur has been built over the past 38 years in the telecom and IT industries the world over. His experience straddles corporate, technological, management and sociological worlds .
Rajat Gupta Mr. Rajat Gupta is the former managing director of McKinsey & Company worldwide. He joined the firm's New York office in 1973, assumed leadership of its Scandinavian offices in 1981, and joined the Chicago office in 1987. He assumed the role of office manager there in 1989, was elected managing director of the firm in 1994 and re-elected twice, once in 1997 and again in 2000.Mr. Rajat Gupta is Chairman of the Board of the Indian School of Business and recently was nominated co-chairman of the United Nations Association of the USA. He is associated with many other professional and business affiliations, including: Private Sector Representative to the Board of the Global Fund for Aids, Malaria, and Tuberculosis; Chairman of the Board of Associates of the Harvard Business School; and Dean's Advisory Council, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management.Mr. Rajat Gupta holds a bachelor of technology degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Dr. Vishakha N. Desai, President, The Asia Society Dr. Vishakha N. Desai, president of the Asia Society, manages an international organization with offices throughout the U.S. and Asia. She sets the direction for the Society’s programs in the diverse fields of arts, culture, policy, business and education, overseeing a budget of $22 million. .Since 1990, Dr. Desai has served the Asia Society in various leadership capacities, most recently as Senior Vice President and Director of the Museum and Cultural Programs. She was responsible for the management of the Society’s $40 million renovation of its New York City headquarters and for its 2001 inaugural season. A scholar of classical Indian art, Dr. Desai has built an international reputation for introducing contemporary Asian art to a broad audience and using it to illuminate historical trends and their influence on the development of today’s society. She has been at the forefront of integrating Asian American issues into the Society’s public programs. A regular commentator in the news media, she frequently addresses business and foreign policy audiences on topics ranging from the evolution of U.S. engagement in Asia to the role of culture in changing Asian societies.Prior to joining the Asia Society. Dr. Desai was a curator of Indian, Southeast Asian and Islamic art at The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where she also served as head of public programs and academic affairs. She has also taught at the University of Massachusetts, Boston University and Columbia University.Dr. Desai received her B.A. from Bombay University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. In 1996 Susquehanna University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate in Arts. The recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, Dr. Desai has published widely on traditional Indian art and on issues in contemporary Asian art. She has lectured extensively in the U.S. and in Asia, and has served as an advisor and juror for numerous international projects on contemporary art, including the Venice Biennale in 2003.Dr. Desai serves on the boards of The Brookings Institution, Citizens for NYC, and the New York City Advisory Commission for Cultural Affairs. She served as the President of the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) in 1998-99, and was on the Board from 1995-2000. She has also served on the Boards of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, LEAP (Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics), the South Asian Council of the Association of Asian Studies, the College Art Association, ArtTable, and the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities. She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Asian Americans for Equality 2004 Asian American of the Year Award and the National Institute of Social Sciences Gold Medal. Professor Marti G. Subrahmanyam,Charles E Merrill Professor of Finance, Economics & Intl. Business, Stern School of Business, New York UniversityProf. Marti G. Subrahmanyam is the Charles E. Merrill Professor of Finance and Economics in the Stern School of Business at New York University. Professor Subrahmanyam has published numerous articles and books in the areas of corporate finance, capital markets and international finance. He has been a visiting professor at leading academic institutions around the world including, most recently the University of Melbourne in Australia, LUISS in Italy and Singapore Management University in Singapore. Professor Subrahmanyam currently serves on the editorial boards of many academic journals and is the co-editor of the Review of Derivatives Research. He has won many teaching awards including New York University’s Distinguished Teaching Medal. He serves as a consultant to several corporations, industrial groups, and financial institutions around the world, such as the State Street Bank. He also sits on the boards of several other companies, including Animi Offshore Fund Ltd., ICICI Bank Ltd., the Murugappa Group, Nexgen Financial Holdings Ltd. and Nomura Asset Management (USA) Inc. He serves as an advisor to international and government organizations, including the Securities and Exchange Board of India. Professor Subrahmanyam holds degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology, or IIT, Madras, the Indian Institute of Management, or IIM, Ahmedabad and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Krishna Palepu,Ross Graham Walker Professor, Harvard Business SchoolProf. Krishna Palepu is the Ross Graham Walker Professor of Business Administration and Senior Associate Dean for International Development, at the Harvard Business School. Prior to assuming his current administrative position, Professor Palepu held other positions at the School, including Senior Associate Dean, Director of Research, and Chair, Accounting and Control Unit. Professor Palepu's current research and teaching activities focus on strategy and governance. Professor Palepu has published numerous academic and practioner-oriented articles and case studies on these issues. In the area of strategy, his recent focus has been on the globalization of emerging markets, particularly India and China, and the resulting opportunities and challenges for western investors and multinationals, and for local companies with global aspirations. He currently teaches a second year MBA course, "Globalization of Emerging Markets," which focuses on these issues. In addition, Professor Palepu Chairs "Global CEOs Program for China," a joint program conducted by HBS with CEIBS, a leading Chinese business school and IESE, a leading European business school. Sreedhar MenonChairman, VITEOS Capital Market Services Limited Sreedhar Menon is currently Chairman of the Board , Strategic Advisor and an equity partner of VITEOS Capital Market Services Limited, who provides knowledge based and full fledged administrative services and end to end solutions to the Hedge Fund Industry.Mr. Menon's previous engagements were as a Partner and Vice Chairman of RRE Ventures, LLC (RRE), a venture capital firm investing in entrepreneurial information technology companies, as Managing Director in the Emerging Markets Group at Lehman Brothers Inc, New York, NY, and as Deputy President and a Member of the Board of American Express Bank Ltd, with whom he had an International career spanning 34 years.Mr. Menon has served as a Member of the Board of Directors of U.S.-India Business Council, Asean-U.S. Business Council and as President of India-America Chamber of Commerce in New York. Mr. Menon is the Sponsor of the Jagdish Bhagwati Chair in Indian Political Economy at Columbia University in the City of New York, the Founder of the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI) at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Member of it's international Advisory Board. He is also a Member of the Board of Trustees of George Foundation Inc, New Jersey, a public charity engaged in the alleviation of poverty in India through education, employment, empowerment of women and promotion of health and clean environment. Mr. Menon received his Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Kerala, India in 1959. Parag Saxena,President and Managing Partner, INVESCO Private Capital Mr. Parag Saxena, President and Managing Partner of INVESCO Private Capital, is a venture capitalist of nearly two decades. He has been involved in more than 300 private transactions, helping numerous private companies grow into successful business ventures. Parag Saxena co-founded the private capital group at Citicorp Investment Management, a predecessor firm of INVESCO, where he previously built a $1.5 billion small-cap group with a top decile record. His career began in 1978 at Becton Dickinson as a product manager. He was later recruited by Booz, Allen and Hamilton to join their Technology Management Services Group, focusing on business strategy development.Mr. Saxena received a M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1982. He earned a B.Tech from The Indian Institute of Technology in 1977, and a M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies in 1978. Dr. Raj Reddy,Herbert A. Simon University Professor of Computer Science & Robotics, Carnegie Mellon University Dr. Raj Reddy is the Mozah Bint Nasser University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor at Stanford in 1966. He has been a member of the Carnegie Mellon faculty since 1969. He served as the founding Director of the Robotics Institute from 1979 to 1991 and the Dean of School of Computer Science from 1991 to 1999.Dr. Reddy's research interests include the study of human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence. His current research projects include Million Book Digital Library Project; PCtvt: an Information Appliance for rural environments (PC, TV, PVR, Video Phone, Audio Phone all in one) for use by illiterate people; FTTV: Fiber To The Village Project; Mobile Autonomous Robots; and Learning by Doing.He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was president of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence from 1987 to 89. Dr. Reddy was awarded the Legion of Honor by President Mitterand of France in 1984. He was awarded the ACM Turing Award in 1994. He served as co-chair of the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) from 1999 to 2001. Dr. Dipak Jain, Dean and Professor of Marketing, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University A distinguished teacher and scholar, Dipak C. Jain has been dean of the Kellogg School of Management since July 2001. He brings more than 20 years of experience in management and education to his position at the school’s helm. Dean Jain is the Sandy and Morton Goldman Professor in Entrepreneurial Studies and a professor of marketing at the Kellogg School, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1987. Prior to his appointment as Dean, he served as the associate dean of academic affairs for five years and worked closely with former Kellogg School Dean Donald P. Jacobs to set the agenda for the school’s curriculum, faculty and research activities. Dean Jain’s areas of research include the marketing of high-tech products; market segmentation and competitive market structure analysis; cross-cultural issues in global product diffusion; new product diffusion; and forecasting models. He has had more than 30 articles published in leading academic journals.
