The Indian American Council has streamlined its focus to impact three broad areas that are considered key to the economic growth of India’s ‘bottom of the pyramid’.

It is also these three areas in which Indian Americans have a large repository of skill and experience to share with growing organizations in India. Below are some ways in which IAC members are contributing their time and expertise.   

Health and HIV  

  • Conduct awareness seminars on a specific public health concern
  • Provide guest lectures at a public medical university
  • Organize medical camps to diagnose and treat
  • Provide training to hospital staff
  • Work with hospital management to improve operations and efficiency

Education and Skill Development

  • Interact with high school students to talk career options
  • Advise university faculty on curriculum design to make courses more employable
  • Develop educational material and train faculty on new pedagogical developments
  • Train school administrative teams on maximizing resources to adopt better learning method

Entrepreneurship Development 

  • Serve as a consultant to a growing organization to advise on growth strategy
  • Mentor groups of entrepreneurs in a specific city or industry
  • Assist India based organizations with finding partners in overseas markets
  • Conduct trainings and seminars on an area of expertise
  • Share research and new practices

NEW IDEAS FOR DIASPORA INVOLVEMENT IN INDIA’S SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT 

Continuing on its objective to deepen engagement with the Indian diaspora, three concurrent sessions at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2009 addressed opportunities presented for participating in social development in India. The PBD convention is being held in Chennai from 7-9 January by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs in partnership with the Government of Tamilnadu and the Confederation of Indian Industry. Health and education have emerged as the key social sector areas for increasing diaspora engagement in India.
